Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Policy
JPLL Policy on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Research and Manuscript Preparation
We understand that the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is ever-expanding in various areas of human life. The Journal permits limited use of GenAI in the research and publication process, with strict guidelines to ensure transparency and academic integrity.
Permitted Uses:
- GenAI may be used for generating research ideas and assisting in research design.
- GenAI tools may be employed for language editing (such as improving the readability of human-generated writing) and image preparation (although the human author must ensure that you are the copyright owner).
Prohibited Uses:
- GenAI must not be used for data generation, data collection, data analysis, or interpretation.
- GenAI cannot be used to draft or write any part of the manuscript.
- As GenAI is unable to take responsibility for a research study and may generate mistaken content, GenAI cannot be recognized for authorship.
- GenAI-generated content (such as literature review) cannot be used for citation - authors must refer to the original source.
Disclosure and Verification:
- Authors must disclose all GenAI use in their research and manuscript preparation. This disclosure should appear in the Acknowledgements section, specifying the tool used, purpose/necessity of use, and extent of use (see the standard statement on "Declaration of GenAI and AI-assisted technologies" in the article template).
- Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy, originality, and appropriateness of any GenAI-assisted outputs.
Failure to comply with this policy may result in rejection of a manuscript or retraction of published work. Wherever authors have doubts about the Policy, please directly contact the Journal Co-Editors-in-Chief prior to submission.
In the Review Process:
Reviewers must not use GenAI in the preparation of a review, including (but not limited to):
- uploading an article for review to GenAI
- asking GenAI to summarize an article for review
- asking GenAI to locate strengths and weaknesses of an article for review
- asking GenAI to make a judgment of the suitability for publication of an article for review
- asking GenAI to write a review
Reviewers may use GenAI tools for language editing (such as improving the readability of a human-generated review)
